Articulating or Telescopic Boom Lift? How to Pick the Right Model

The difference between a jointed arm and a straight arm, the real reach of each type, and how to choose the model that fits your site.

Articulating or Telescopic Boom Lift? How to Pick the Right Model

Hiring the wrong model is the most common source of waste in work-at-height jobs. Too small and it does not reach; too big and it struggles to get on site while costing more than it needs to.

The two families of machine hired most often are articulating boom lifts and telescopic boom lifts. The difference is not just the shape of the arm, but the kind of work each can do.

Articulating Boom Lift: The Arm That Bends

An articulating boom lift has a jointed arm that folds. That lets the platform rise, move over and around obstacles such as columns, low roofs, or existing structures, then come back down into the working position.

Typical reach is 14 to 20 metres. Electric versions are quiet and emission free, which makes them suitable for work inside factories, warehouses, and shopping centres.

  • Suits indoor work and tight spaces
  • Can reach areas hidden behind obstacles
  • Electric options for noise and emission sensitive areas
  • Hire rates start from RM 600 per day

Telescopic Boom Lift: Maximum Reach

A telescopic boom lift uses a straight arm that extends like a telescope. With no joint in the middle, nearly the whole arm length goes into reach, letting these machines work at up to 41 metres.

They are diesel powered and built for outdoor work: tall structures, telecom towers, and office building facades. Hire rates start from RM 1,200 per day.

When a Scissor Lift Is the Better Fit

If your work is purely vertical and needs no horizontal outreach, a scissor lift is usually the most economical choice. The platform is wider, the load capacity is higher, and two people can work with tools at the same time.

Electric scissor lifts are popular for warehouse ceiling maintenance, lighting installation, and high racking work. Hire rates start from RM 400 per day.

Three Questions to Answer Before You Choose

Before you call any rental company, have these three details ready. They save time and stop the wrong machine turning up at your gate.

With those three answers, any experienced hire desk can recommend the right model without needing a site visit first.

  1. What is the actual working height in metres, not the number of storeys
  2. Is there anything between where the machine stands and where the work is
  3. Is the ground firm or soft, and how wide is the access route
