Daily, Weekly, or Monthly Hire: Which Actually Pays Off?
How to pick the right hire period for your project, the break-even point between each rate, and the scheduling mistakes that cost real money.
The daily rate looks the most flexible, but it is also the most expensive per day. Plenty of contractors pay a daily rate for nine days when the weekly rate would have cost half as much.
This article shows the break-even point between each rate so you can choose with confidence before the project starts.
The Break-Even Point Between Rates
Take an articulating boom lift as the example. Daily hire starts from RM 600, weekly from RM 2,800, and monthly from RM 7,000 for 30 days.
That means the weekly rate is already cheaper after the fifth day, and the monthly rate wins after roughly twelve days of daily hire.
- 1 to 4 working days: the daily rate is reasonable
- 5 to 11 days: the weekly rate is almost always cheaper
- 12 days and beyond: ask for the monthly rate
- Recurring projects: ask about a long-term contract rate
The Scheduling Mistakes That Cost Money
The most common mistake is hiring the machine before the preparation work is finished. The machine sits on site for three days while the crew finishes something else, and those three days are still billed.
The second mistake is returning the machine too early and hiring again the following week. Two short hires are almost always dearer than one continuous one.
Build Rain Into the Plan
In Malaysia, afternoon rain can stop work at height for a few hours most days. On outdoor jobs, add a margin to your duration estimate.
Weekly and monthly rates protect you from that risk because a lost day does not directly add cost the way it does on a daily rate.
Maintenance During a Long Hire
On monthly hires, scheduled on-site maintenance should be part of the rate. That means a technician comes to check the machine without you having to ask.
Confirm this when booking. A machine that stops working in week three of a project is a far more expensive disruption than the difference between rates.
