A Work-at-Height Safety Checklist for Boom Lift Jobs
Pre-start inspection, ground and wind limits, harness practice, and the common mistakes behind accidents on Malaysian sites.
Most boom lift accidents are not caused by machine failure. They happen because the machine was set up on uneven ground, the platform struck a structure, or a worker never clipped the harness inside the basket.
This checklist follows the real order of a job: before start-up, during the work, and before the machine goes back.
Inspection Before Start-Up
A daily visual check takes under five minutes and catches nearly every problem that would otherwise stop work by midday.
Record the check in writing. If an incident happens, the daily record is the first document the authorities will ask for.
- Look for hydraulic leaks under the machine and at the boom joints
- Test the emergency stop at the platform and at the ground panel
- Check tyres, stabilisers, and fuel or battery level
- Confirm the platform gate closes and latches properly
Ground, Slope, and Wind Conditions
Aerial work platforms are designed to operate on firm and near-level ground. Soft ground after rain, holes covered with a board, and drain covers are the most frequent causes of tip-over.
Wind matters too. Most outdoor boom lifts have an operating wind limit around 12.5 metres per second. At height, wind acts on the whole boom, not just on the worker.
Harnesses and Practice Inside the Platform
In a boom lift, the harness is there to keep the worker inside the platform when the boom moves suddenly, not to arrest a fall from full height.
That is why the lanyard must clip to an anchor point inside the platform, never to the building outside. Clipping to the structure can pull a worker out of the basket when the machine moves.
- Wear a full body harness, not a waist belt
- Clip only to the platform anchor points
- Never climb on or stand on the platform rails
- Never add boards or ladders inside the basket to gain height
Controlling the Area Below the Platform
The area under and around the machine should be closed off with cones or warning tape. A tool dropped from 20 metres is a serious hazard however light it is.
Make sure at least one person on the ground knows how to use the lower controls to bring the platform down if the operator is incapacitated or power is lost.
